Growing Protests Erupt Over Luxury Development on Albania’s Adriatic Coast
On Saturday, approximately 200 protesters in Albania made a bold stand against a luxury development project along the Adriatic coast, highlighting rising tensions regarding construction in environmentally sensitive and locally significant areas. The protest took place at a contentious site near Vlora, a region renowned for its diverse ecosystems, including flamingo habitats and critical turtle nesting sites.
The demonstration marks a continuation of widespread opposition against the proposed luxury resort linked to a company associated with Jared Kushner, former U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law. Local residents have mobilized in recent weeks, expressing their frustration over potential environmental degradation and the impact on their land.
Protesters, primarily from the village of Rrjoll, gathered at the development site, which is situated amid picturesque sandy beaches and pine forests in northwestern Albania. They voiced their grievances regarding ongoing construction that they allege is taking place on land that was unjustly confiscated from them.
Chanting slogans such as “Revolution!” and waving Albanian flags, the demonstrators took decisive action by dismantling metal and razor-wire fences surrounding the luxury resort area. Although some clashes occurred with law enforcement, police refrained from intervening in the protest, allowing the crowd to express their dissent.
Zeke Nikolle Shullani, a 56-year-old landowner participating in the protest, articulated the sentiments of the villagers. “The protests will not stop until the residents of the village of Rrjoll are compensated. We are 200 families whose land has been seized,” he stated, underscoring their demand for justice and accountability.
The luxury resort project is being developed by an Albanian company and has recently been granted “special status investor” status by the Albanian government, which allows for expedited approval processes and greater investment incentives. This designation, however, has only fueled local anger, as residents feel their rights and land are being overlooked in favor of foreign investment.
Another local landowner, Nikolin Markpalaj, 60, expressed his frustration, stating, “What is happening in this country is madness. We asked the investors to come and consult with the people, but they refused. They think they can take all this wealth without blood or anything else that might happen here?”
The situation in Rrjoll reflects a broader concern among Albanians regarding the prioritization of luxury developments over environmental protection and local community rights. As protests continue, the call for a dialogue between local residents and developers becomes increasingly urgent.
