Breaking News: Funeral Arrangements for Ali Khamenei Announced
The funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, will begin in Tehran on July 4, 2026. State media reports that he will be buried in his hometown of Mashhad on July 9.
Three days of funeral ceremonies will take place in Tehran from July 4. A ceremony is also scheduled in the holy city of Qom on July 7.
Khamenei, aged 86, was killed in a joint US-Israeli air strike on his compound in February. His burial was initially planned for March but was postponed due to ongoing conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran.
Khamenei led Iran from 1989 after the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. While Khomeini was the ideological leader of the Islamic revolution, Khamenei focused on shaping Iran’s military and paramilitary forces.
His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has remained largely out of public view since the start of the US-Israel conflict. Recently, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that Mojtaba may be taking a more active role as negotiations continue following an April 8 truce.
