UK Electric Car Sales Surge as One in Four New Cars is an EV Amid Rising Fuel Prices

Breaking News: Rise of Electric Cars in the UK

Sales of electric vehicles (EVs) continue to soar in the UK, with one in four cars sold now being electric. Emma Pinchbeck, CEO of the Climate Change Committee, highlighted this trend, noting that the growth is largely due to rising petrol and diesel prices amid the ongoing fuel crisis in Iran.

Many consumers are seeking more affordable options as fossil fuel prices remain unstable. Pinchbeck stated, “We can see in the numbers what people want – cheap cars and cars that will save them money.”

However, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reported that much of this demand has been driven by significant discounts from car manufacturers. CEO Mike Hawes mentioned that the industry has lost over £10 billion since 2024 due to these discounts, which he called unsustainable.

The SMMT supports the government’s plan to weaken its Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) mandate, which sets production targets for EVs. In contrast, the UKCCC urged the government to maintain the current policy to encourage further growth in electric vehicle adoption.
