Breaking News: Election Infrastructure Concerns Raised
Former President Donald Trump has reiterated concerns about the security of U.S. election infrastructure. In a recent speech, he claimed that previously classified intelligence assessments indicate vulnerabilities in voting machines.
Trump stated that adversaries, including Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea, have the capability to compromise U.S. election systems. He referenced a declassified assessment from January 2020, which noted that ballot and voting machine preparation is vulnerable to cyber threats.
The assessment also indicated that machines lacking paper backups are particularly at risk. However, it emphasized that security measures in place make large-scale manipulation of voting results challenging.
Additionally, a report from August 2020 warned that foreign actors might attempt to disrupt election infrastructure.
Trump’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about election security, which has been a bipartisan focus in the U.S. for years. Despite the concerns raised, he has previously taken actions that critics say undermine the independence of agencies monitoring election security.
