Breaking News: Extreme Heat in Europe Linked to Climate Change
Climate change is causing extreme weather in Europe, according to health official Tedros. He stated that Europe is warming at “twice the global average.”
Tedros warned that heatwaves, once considered rare, are now happening nearly every year. He urged European countries to implement “heat health action plans” to protect public health.
In response to the extreme heat, European authorities are taking significant measures. The Dutch music festival Defqon.1 was canceled due to a severe heat warning.
In Paris, officials banned drinking takeaway alcohol in public and canceled the city’s pride march to ease the burden on emergency services. This ban started at noon on Friday and lasted until Sunday morning, coinciding with France’s World Cup match against Norway.
Since the heatwave began, at least 74 people have drowned in France, primarily in unsupervised bodies of water, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez.
The current record-breaking heat is attributed to a “heat dome” effect, which compresses and heats air as it sinks. This weather pattern prevents cloud formation, allowing for stronger sunshine and higher ground temperatures.
