Breaking News: UK Launches Appeal for Venezuela Earthquake Relief
The UK’s Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) has launched an appeal to assist those affected by recent twin earthquakes in Venezuela.
Fifteen UK aid agencies, including the British Red Cross and Oxfam, are urging the public to donate. Over 1,700 people have died since the earthquakes struck near Caracas last Wednesday, and tens of thousands are still missing.
The charities emphasize the urgent need for shelter, food, and water for survivors. Venezuela’s interim President, Delcy Rodríguez, described the earthquakes as the “most brutal natural catastrophe” in the country’s history. At least 5,000 people have been injured, and hospitals are overwhelmed with critical supply shortages.
According to the UN, approximately 2,500 buildings have been affected, with many completely collapsed. Several countries, including the UK, have sent search and rescue teams to assist.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper announced that the UK government will match donations up to £2 million. The appeal will be broadcast on the BBC and other media on Wednesday.
