SSPX Defies Vatican Authority in Controversial Ordination Ceremony, Challenging Pope Leo’s Leadership

Breaking News: SSPX Ordination Sparks Tensions with Vatican

The Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) conducted a controversial ordination ceremony in Écône, Switzerland, defying Vatican policies. Founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in 1970, SSPX seeks to maintain traditional practices, including celebrating Mass in Latin and facing the altar during services.

SSPX has consistently opposed Vatican efforts to modernize the Church, including promoting interfaith dialogue and recognizing religious freedom. The Society’s Superior General, Davide Pagliarani, stated the ordination aimed to honor the Pope, despite ongoing tensions.

The event attracted thousands, with attendees receiving commemorative items, such as baseball caps and novelty wine packs. SSPX claims around 600,000 followers globally, primarily in the U.S., where it has a strong presence in Kansas.

Pope Leo has labeled the new bishops as illegitimate and views the ordination as a challenge to the Church. Despite this, he may refrain from further action to avoid escalating the rift within the Catholic community.
