Breaking News: Amber Heat Health Alerts Extended in England
Amber heat health alerts have been extended to the north of England as the third heatwave of the year brings temperatures up to 35°C (95°F) on Thursday. These alerts now cover almost all of England, indicating possible health impacts and travel disruptions until 21:00 BST on Sunday.
Commuters faced delays, cancellations, and slower rail services on Thursday evening. NHS England reported that ambulance services are under “sustained pressure” due to the heat.
Thursday’s high of 35.5°C was recorded in Surrey, marking the UK’s eighth day this year with temperatures reaching or exceeding 34°C. This surpasses the previous records of seven days in 1976 and 2020.
Further high temperatures are expected as the heatwave peaks on Friday. Wales recorded 31.3°C in Cardiff, Scotland reached 29.3°C in Charterhall, and Northern Ireland saw 27.5°C in Killowen.
New amber alerts have been issued for north-west England and Yorkshire, while a yellow alert remains in place for the north-east. The heatwave also affects events like Wimbledon, where additional measures are in place to protect players and spectators.
