Mexican Government to File Criminal Complaints in U.S. After Deaths of 14 Citizens in ICE Custody

Breaking News: Mexican Government to File Complaints in U.S. Over Citizen Deaths

The Mexican government announced it will file criminal complaints in the United States regarding the deaths of over a dozen Mexican citizens in U.S. custody. Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco stated the government aims to take “forceful legal action” to protect the rights of its citizens.

Velasco reported that 14 Mexicans died while in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with three additional deaths occurring during ICE arrest operations.

The announcement follows protests in Houston, Texas, where over a thousand people gathered in response to the shooting of Mexican national Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by an ICE officer. Salgado, 52, had lived in Houston for three decades and was reportedly on his way to work when he was shot.

Salgado’s son, Ronaldo, expressed that his father should not be reduced to a news headline. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that ICE attempted a vehicle stop as part of a targeted operation to arrest an illegal alien. They claimed Salgado attempted to evade arrest and posed a threat, leading to the officer firing in self-defense.
