A recent report by Morgan & Mallet International reveals a significant surge in salaries for household staff, driven by the increasing complexity of life among affluent families. Private chefs can earn between $100,000 and $300,000 annually, while butlers can command salaries as high as $180,000. This trend highlights a growing demand for personal assistants, nannies, housekeepers, chauffeurs, and estate managers as wealthy individuals expand their real estate portfolios and manage larger families.

The report indicates that the hiring landscape for household staff has reached unprecedented levels. With the affluent acquiring multiple homes and seeking to maintain a high standard of living, the competition for skilled personnel has intensified. “Many clients are surprised by the rising cost of household services,” the report states, emphasizing that the challenge of securing experienced staff has led to record-high wages for top candidates globally.

Among household positions, house managers are experiencing the fastest salary growth. Laurine Mallet, co-founder of Morgan & Mallet, attributes this trend to the increasing real estate investments of the wealthy and a diminishing pool of qualified candidates.

The market for private chefs is particularly robust. In the United States, the demand for chefs has skyrocketed as ultra-wealthy families opt for Michelin-starred culinary talent to avoid the crowds of high-end restaurants. Celebrity chefs command the highest fees, while those skilled in specialized diets, such as gluten-free cooking, can also set their own rates.

Nannies with multilingual skills and experience in special needs care are in high demand. Traveling nannies, although rare, can earn up to $163,000 in regions like the United Arab Emirates. In the United States, personal assistants are the most sought-after household staff, with salaries reaching up to $250,000.

The report also highlights evolving hiring criteria, with privacy and discretion becoming essential. In Los Angeles, for instance, 77% of personal assistants are now required to sign nondisclosure agreements, and strict social media bans are common across all household roles.

Historically, household staff often maintained long tenures with their employers, sometimes spanning decades. However, the average employment duration has now decreased to three years. This shift is largely due to the wealthy frequently relocating and maintaining residences in multiple countries, necessitating staff who are ready for international mobility.

Skilled estate managers, who are tasked with overseeing multiple properties across different legal frameworks, are increasingly difficult to find. In the United States, household managers can earn between $150,000 and $250,000, reflecting their specialized expertise.

Butlers, once characterized by traditional roles, have evolved to manage intricate logistics, technology, and staff across various estates. Their salaries can reach up to $180,000, as clients seek efficient service without the formality of past eras. “Clients want efficient service with less formality,” the report notes, underscoring the importance of discretion, confidentiality, and adaptability in the modern household.

As the demand for household staff continues to rise, the landscape of employment in this sector is rapidly changing, reflecting the evolving needs and expectations of affluent families worldwide.
