Breaking News: US Seismologist Detained in China
China has detained US seismologist Chen Youlin on espionage charges for nearly two years, according to his family. Chen, 54, was arrested in November 2024 while visiting family in Beijing.
His wife, Rong Yufang, stated that Chen’s work involved collaboration with Chinese colleagues and argued that the allegations against him are incorrect. Chen specializes in using seismic data to monitor nuclear tests, particularly concerning North Korea.
Chen is currently the only US citizen designated as “wrongfully detained” in China. His family has not been able to contact him for over 600 days, raising concerns about his health and well-being. Rong reported that he faced over 100 interrogations and was denied legal representation for the first 13 months.
Chinese authorities maintain that they handle cases legally and deny any wrongful detention. Espionage charges in China can lead to severe penalties, including life imprisonment.
Advocacy groups have expressed concern about Chen’s health, citing his diabetes and high blood pressure. US Senator Edward Markey has called for increased attention to Chen’s case, hoping it will lead to his release.
