Breaking News: Wildfires in Spain Claim 13 Lives

Officials have confirmed that 13 people died in recent wildfires in Spain. Among the victims, seven were from the United Kingdom, three from Belgium, one from France, and one from the United States. The last victim was a Spanish citizen.

The deceased include eight women and five men, all adults. The couple Pete and Fran Gillam, who lived in the village of Bédar, were among the British nationals confirmed dead. Their family shared the news on social media, expressing their heartbreak.

Nearly 1,500 people were evacuated from Almería province as firefighters worked to control the flames. British resident Malcolm Timbrell, 70, survived the fires but lost his wife and friends. He described how he sought refuge in abandoned cars as the fire spread.

The wildfires burned approximately 7,000 hectares (17,300 acres) of land before being contained. Spain has faced severe heatwaves in recent years, with temperatures often exceeding 40°C.
