Breaking News: Review of MPs’ Security After Ann Widdecombe’s Death
Andy Burnham has called for a serious review of security measures for Members of Parliament (MPs) following the death of Ann Widdecombe. Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, expressed shock at the current level of security for politicians, stating it may need to be increased further.
The investigation into Widdecombe’s death, a former Conservative MP and Reform UK spokeswoman, is now being handled by counter-terrorism police. A 28-year-old man from Rotherham has been arrested on suspicion of murder and later re-arrested on suspicion of terrorism-related activities.
Widdecombe was found dead at her home in Haytor, Devon. Burnham noted that political discourse has become more dangerous, suggesting social media may contribute to increased hostility.
In related news, Robert Jenrick from Reform accused the government of failing to provide adequate security for party leader Nigel Farage. The Home Office denied these claims, stating that decisions regarding MPs’ security are not made by ministers.
Security for MPs has been a growing concern, especially after previous incidents involving the murders of MPs. The government announced a £31 million package to enhance MP security in May 2024.
