Breaking News: Cricket Legend Garfield Sobers Celebrates Milestone
Bridgetown, Barbados – Garfield St Aubrun Sobers, a renowned figure in cricket, was born on July 28, 1936. He faced early challenges, losing his father during World War Two, leaving his mother, Thelma, to raise six children.
Sobers showed talent in multiple sports as a child and began playing cricket at a local club in his teens. He made his first-class debut at 16 against Indian tourists at Kensington Oval, where he took four wickets in each innings.
His Test debut followed 14 months later at 17, where he again took four wickets against England in Jamaica. Initially batting at number nine, he was promoted to number six in his next match against Australia in 1955. Sobers impressed by scoring 47 and later became an emergency opener, hitting three consecutive fours off legendary bowler Keith Miller.
In 1957, Sobers toured England. Although he had only one half-century in five Tests, he made headlines with an unbeaten 219 at Trent Bridge, showcasing his potential for future success.
