Over a Thousand Rally for Justin Pearson Amid Recent Tragedies in Memphis
In a powerful show of support, over a thousand individuals gathered at New Direction Christian Church in Hickory Hill, Memphis, to back Justin Pearson, a Democratic state representative vying for a congressional seat. This rally comes in the wake of four tragic shootings involving members of the Memphis Safe Task Force over the past two months, which have ignited public outrage and concern.
During the event, Pearson emphasized the urgent need for change within the district, state, and nation. “Today we are in the fight of our lives to make this district, our state, and this nation better for ourselves and for those who will come after us,” he declared passionately. He drew on themes of faith and resilience, asserting that their collective spirit could not be undermined by any opposition, referencing historical struggles for civil rights.
Several prominent progressive representatives joined Pearson at the rally, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, and Summer Lee of Pennsylvania. The families of recent victims, including the tragic case of Tywin Johnson—a 20-year-old musician killed by soldiers called to respond to an alleged robbery—demand transparency and accountability from authorities.
Pearson warned that the increase in law enforcement presence, especially following federal orders last year, has led to increasingly costly and tragic outcomes. “Our worst fears have been realized,” he said, calling for remembrance and justice for families affected by violence.
