Wealthy Britons Call for Increased Taxes on the Rich
In a notable appeal to the new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, a group of 120 affluent individuals, including former footballer Gary Lineker and renowned music producer Brian Eno, has urged for a reassessment of tax policies aimed at the wealthiest citizens. This open letter, initiated by the organization Patriotic Millionaires, emphasizes the need for a more equitable society through increased taxation on those whose wealth is primarily inherited or accumulated rather than earned through labor.
The letter articulates a clear message: “We can afford it.” The signatories advocate for a wealth tax specifically targeting individuals with assets exceeding £10 million, proposing a rate of 2%. They argue that such measures would facilitate a “devolution of wealth and power from the very richest,” ultimately benefiting society as a whole.
The letter also highlights existing avenues for wealthy individuals to contribute voluntarily to the Treasury, suggesting that those who wish to pay more taxes can do so through established donation facilities. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch responded to the letter by stating that Lineker is free to make additional contributions, noting that “no one is stopping him.”
Among the other notable signatories are Richard Curtis, director of the film “Notting Hill,” Ian Gregg, former managing director of the bakery chain Greggs, and Scottish crime novelist Val McDermid. The letter emphasizes a collective sentiment among millionaires who believe that investing in the nation is not only a patriotic duty but also essential for the country’s success.
Chief Secretary to the Treasury Emma Reynolds welcomed the idea of increased tax contributions from the wealthy, stating that any significant changes to tax policy would be outlined in the upcoming Budget. “I welcome the fact that people of good means are saying they want to pay more. They can pay more,” she affirmed, reiterating the availability of the Treasury’s donation link.
This renewed push for higher taxes on the affluent follows similar campaigns in previous years. When questioned about the possibility of a wealth tax, Burnham did not dismiss the idea, suggesting that he may need to “ask for a little more” from the wealthy in the future.
Lineker, who previously earned approximately £1.3 million annually as a BBC presenter and is estimated to have a net worth of around £30 million, has been vocal about the need for a fairer tax system. The letter from Patriotic Millionaires underscores a growing consensus among the wealthy that a new approach to wealth distribution is necessary for the betterment of society.
The letter further states that the majority of millionaires support the idea of increased taxation on themselves, challenging the notion that high taxes would drive them away from the UK. Eno, in a recent interview, criticized the current tax system as being overly favorable to the wealthy, arguing that the narrative of mass exodus among millionaires due to higher taxes is largely exaggerated.
Eno noted, “Of course a few people will [leave], but people don’t necessarily leave other high-tax countries, such as those in Scandinavia.” He emphasized that many wealthy individuals are committed to improving public services and addressing poverty, often supporting community initiatives.
The appeal from Patriotic Millionaires represents a significant shift in discourse around wealth and taxation in the UK, highlighting a desire among some of the country’s wealthiest citizens to contribute more meaningfully to societal welfare and economic equity.
