Breaking News: Police Chief Apologizes Over Missed Evidence in Synagogue Attack
A police chief has apologized after revealing that phones were seized from the Manchester synagogue attacker months before his violent act but were not examined. Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, was on bail for an alleged rape when he attacked Heaton Park Synagogue in Crumpsall on October 2, 2025, resulting in the deaths of two Jewish men.
The devices, confiscated after Al-Shamie’s arrests in February and September, contained evidence of his extremist views. Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson expressed deep regret, stating that the information could have led to further investigation.
Sir Stephen confirmed that an internal review showed the significance of the data on Al-Shamie’s devices was substantial in understanding his mindset. He acknowledged the distress this oversight may have caused to the victims and their families.
The apology follows the sentencing of Mohammad Bashir, who was jailed for life for plotting a separate attack with Al-Shamie. Evidence presented in court included WhatsApp conversations where the pair discussed extremist plans and their desire to become martyrs.
