Breaking News: Evacuations Ordered in Lacanau Area Due to Fires
On Tuesday morning, the Gironde prefect ordered the evacuation of all camping sites near the coast at Lacanau. Tourists in the nearby town are advised to prepare for a possible evacuation.
Approximately 4,000 tourists are affected, adding to the 220,000 people already evacuated across France in recent days. Officials report that around 240 homes have been destroyed.
Firefighters are actively working to control fires in various parts of the region. A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of starting a fire in the Var region and faces up to 15 years in prison. Since July 6, a total of 184 people have been arrested in connection with the fires.
Peggy Plouhinec, director of Château Picque Caillou, reported that her wine estate closed due to smoke but conditions have improved since recent rainfall. She noted a significant drop in tourism, which will affect the hospitality sector.
Residents remain concerned about the impact of the fires on their homes and businesses. The situation remains critical as firefighters continue their efforts.
