Breaking News: Hadi Matar Convicted of Terrorism Charges
A man in the U.S. has been convicted of additional charges related to terrorism. Hadi Matar, already serving 25 years in prison for attempting to kill author Sir Salman Rushdie, was found guilty in a New York federal court on Wednesday.
Matar was convicted of providing material support to Hezbollah, which the U.S. and other countries classify as a terrorist group. Prosecutors stated that Matar was influenced by a fatwa issued by Iran’s religious leader in 1989, calling for Rushdie’s death.
During the trial, Rushdie testified about the attack, describing how a firefighter saved his life. The jury also heard evidence that Matar had been plotting the attack for two years, motivated by a 2006 speech from Hezbollah’s leader.
Matar, 28, faces a potential life sentence in federal prison. His defense argued that the attack was not terrorism-related and questioned Rushdie’s controversial novel, “The Satanic Verses.” Rushdie responded that the trial was about Matar’s actions, not his book.
The case highlights ongoing tensions surrounding freedom of expression and violent extremism.
