Breaking News: Heat-Related Deaths in the UK Surge
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reports an estimated 2,877 heat-related deaths during the heatwaves in May and June. This figure is nearly double that of last year.
The agency’s preliminary assessment indicates that 753 deaths occurred during the heatwave from May 24 to May 27, while 2,124 deaths were linked to the heatwave from June 21 to June 28. Both heatwaves set new monthly temperature records, with highs of 31.5°C at Kew Gardens and 38.0°C in Lingwood, Norfolk.
UKHSA suggests that 2026 could see the highest number of heat-associated deaths on record, with final figures expected in early 2027. The previous record was in 2022, with 2,985 deaths.
Health Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized the serious impact of the heat on public health and the NHS. She thanked healthcare workers for their efforts during this challenging period.
Additionally, drought conditions have been declared across more than half of England due to ongoing dry weather. The Environment Agency reports that water usage is outpacing natural replenishment.
Cooler temperatures and rain are forecasted for parts of the UK, but the driest areas may not benefit.
