Political Alliance Formed to Challenge Netanyahu’s Government Ahead of Upcoming Elections

In a significant development in Israeli politics, two prominent rivals of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have announced a strategic alliance aimed at unifying the fragmented opposition ahead of the upcoming elections later this year. Former Prime Ministers Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid revealed their collaboration on Sunday, merging their parties, Bennett 2026 and There is a Future, into a new political entity named “Together.”
This alliance seeks to consolidate opposition forces that have struggled to find common ground, primarily united by their shared opposition to Netanyahu’s leadership. Bennett, a right-wing politician, and Lapid, representing the centrist faction, aim to leverage their combined influence to challenge the current administration.
In a joint televised statement, Bennett expressed optimism about their collaboration, stating, “I am pleased to announce that tonight, together with my friend Yair Lapid, I am taking the most Zionist and patriotic step we have ever taken for our country.” Lapid echoed this sentiment, acknowledging Bennett’s integrity as a right-wing politician and emphasizing the necessity of unity: “This move is intended to unite the bloc, put an end to internal divisions, and focus all efforts on winning the critical upcoming elections – and leading Israel forward into the future.”
Bennett indicated that if their alliance secures victory, he intends to establish a national commission of inquiry to investigate the failures leading to the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack, a topic that has been met with resistance from Netanyahu’s government. Both leaders have been vocal critics of Netanyahu’s handling of security issues since that attack, with Lapid labeling the ceasefire agreement with Iran a “political disaster.”

Bennett and Lapid have previously joined forces, successfully ending Netanyahu’s 12-year tenure in the 2021 elections. Their coalition, however, lasted only 18 months. In prior political maneuvers, they managed to enter Netanyahu’s coalition government in 2013, sidelining his ultra-Orthodox allies.
Netanyahu, who has been Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, made a political comeback in November 2022, forming what is considered the most right-wing government in the nation’s history. However, the aftermath of the October 2023 Hamas attack, which resulted in a severe military response from Israel, has significantly impacted Netanyahu’s standing. Recent polling data reveals that Bennett, 54, a former army commando and tech entrepreneur, is currently trailing Netanyahu in voter support. An April 23 survey by Israel’s N12 News projected that Bennett’s party could secure 21 of the Knesset’s 120 seats, compared to 25 seats for Netanyahu’s Likud party. Lapid’s party, on the other hand, is forecasted to secure only seven seats, a decline from its current 24.
These findings align with previous surveys conducted by academic institutions and media outlets, which have positioned Bennett as a leading contender against Netanyahu. Lapid, 62, a former television news anchor, aims to represent Israel’s secular middle class, which has increasingly voiced concerns regarding perceived inequities in tax and military service obligations.
