Breaking News: Clashes in Bolivia Amid Protests
Military and law enforcement clashed with demonstrators outside La Paz, Bolivia, on Saturday. The operation aimed to clear roadways blocked during nationwide antigovernment protests.
Around 3,500 soldiers and police were deployed. The citizens’ rights ombudsman reported that approximately 57 people were arrested.
Protests have been organized by miners, schoolteachers, Indigenous groups, and unions. They are expressing anger against President Rodrigo Paz’s government amid a severe economic crisis. Bolivia is facing its worst economic situation in decades, with declining foreign currency reserves and slowed exports, particularly of natural gas.
Since 2022, Bolivia has shifted from being a major energy exporter to importing fuel, worsening the crisis. Long lines for fuel and shortages of basic supplies, including food, have been reported across the country.
President Paz’s administration has faced backlash for ending a long-standing fuel subsidy and attempting to privatize state-owned companies. Protests have led to the repeal of a controversial land reform measure.
The government claims that 22 roadblocks have been set up nationwide. Three people have reportedly died due to blocked access to hospitals. The crackdown on protesters is intended to create a “humanitarian corridor” for essential supplies.
