Breaking News: NHS Consultants Vote for Potential Strike Action
Consultants across England have voted in favor of potential strike action regarding pay and pensions. In a recent ballot conducted by the British Medical Association (BMA), 76% of senior doctors expressed willingness to strike, granting them a mandate for action over the next year.
The vote comes after resident doctors accepted a pay deal with the government to end three years of strikes. The BMA reports that hundreds of thousands of patient appointments have been canceled due to previous industrial actions.
Of the 35,067 eligible members, 18,069 voted, with 13,695 in support of strike action. Dr. Helen Neary and Dr. Shanu Datta, co-chairs of the BMA consultants committee, emphasized that this vote signals consultants’ dissatisfaction with ongoing pay issues.
Health and Social Care Secretary James Murray stated there is “no justification” for strikes, citing high salaries for consultants. He urged the BMA to avoid disruptive actions.
If strikes proceed, hospitals may face challenges in managing appointments and operations requiring senior doctors, although emergency care will continue. Meanwhile, a separate ballot of specialist doctors did not meet the legal turnout threshold.
