Breaking News: Canadian Prime Minister Advocates for Middle Power Unity Ahead of G7
On Saturday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke at the De Chastelain Public Lecture series in Dublin, Ireland. He emphasized the need for “middle powers” to unite as the global order changes.
Carney stated that the world is facing significant challenges. He noted, “The post-Cold War world’s rules-based order is breaking down.” He called for collaboration among countries like Canada and Ireland to strengthen their collective power.
Carney’s comments come just before the G7 summit in France, where he and U.S. President Donald Trump will be present. Tensions have risen between Canada and the U.S. since Trump’s return to office, with Trump suggesting Canada should become the “51st state.”
Carney did not specify which countries are undermining the global order but expressed concerns about economic integration being used as a weapon. He urged Europe and Canada to work together to address shared challenges like climate change and global conflicts.
His remarks echoed themes from a previous speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Carney aims to build a new alliance among middle powers to enhance their influence on the world stage.
