Breaking News: Egypt Works to Save Gaza Ceasefire

Published on 30 May 2026

Egypt is urgently trying to save a fragile ceasefire agreement in Gaza that is close to failing. The Egyptian government has warned Israel against expanding its occupation in Gaza, which could jeopardize ongoing peace efforts amid renewed airstrikes.

An Egyptian intelligence official stated that Egypt has invited a senior Hamas delegation, led by Khalil al-Hayya, for urgent talks. The official described negotiations as intense, with Cairo aiming to arrange discussions before the end of the week to prevent a full-scale war.

Recent Israeli military actions have resulted in the deaths of at least 141 Palestinians in the past two weeks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the military to increase its control in Gaza from 53% to 70%, violating a US-brokered peace plan.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has also sparked outrage by discussing plans for the “voluntary migration” of Palestinians. Egypt has rejected any measures that push Gaza residents towards emigration.

Cairo is coordinating with mediators in Qatar and Turkiye, as well as US officials, to revive the peace process. Hamas has indicated that the ceasefire is at risk due to repeated Israeli violations and is calling for urgent international action.
