Flights at London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports are experiencing significant delays due to thunderstorms following a heatwave. Over 800 flights have been delayed, with many cancellations reported. Delays are expected to continue throughout the day.
Passengers have reported waiting for hours. One traveler shared on social media that her daughter was stuck on an Easyjet plane at Gatwick for four hours before the flight was canceled.
Gatwick Airport has implemented temporary air traffic control restrictions. Easyjet has apologized for the disruptions. According to FlightAware, around 400 flights at Heathrow and 400 at Gatwick have been delayed.
For example, a British Airways flight from Santiago, Chile, originally scheduled to land at 10:00 BST, is now expected to arrive at 21:00 BST.
The European aviation agency Eurocontrol indicates severe air traffic control delays in the airspace between southeast England and northwestern Europe, where the storms are currently located. Other UK airports remain largely unaffected.
An amber warning for extreme heat is in place for parts of eastern and southeastern England until Sunday morning. Thunderstorms are forecast to worsen throughout Saturday afternoon.
