Breaking News: Southern Europe Faces Deadly Wildfires Amid Heatwave
A severe heatwave with temperatures around 40°C (104°F) has led to wildfires across Southern Europe this summer, particularly impacting France, Portugal, and Spain.
On Friday, Francisco Miguel Reyes, the mayor of Los Gallardos, described the situation, stating, “It feels like a bomb has fallen.” He noted that this fire is the most devastating the area has faced.
Hundreds of firefighters, military personnel, and law enforcement are actively battling the flames, supported by 30 aircraft. In Madrid, forensic scientists are working to identify victims using DNA samples from the deceased and their families. The process has been delayed as family members travel from abroad to provide samples.
At least 12 people have died, marking this as one of the deadliest wildfire events in Spanish history. Comparatively, the deadliest fire occurred in 1984, claiming 20 lives in the Canary Islands.
In France, over 10,000 residents were evacuated from their homes in the Pyrenees on Monday. Authorities have arrested 32 individuals on suspicion of starting some of the fires.
The situation remains critical as wildfires continue to ravage the region.
