Maryam, a 46-year-old mother from southern Somalia, has fled her village with her six children due to severe food shortages. She reports that three consecutive seasons of failed rains have led to widespread malnutrition, affecting over 300,000 people since January.
Maryam arrived at a makeshift camp near Kismayo, where she and others are struggling to find food and medical care. The camp manager confirmed that five children died from malnutrition in March alone.
International aid operations have been disrupted due to funding cuts. Many organizations, including Save the Children, have reduced their programs significantly. More than 200 health centers and 400 schools have closed since last year.
Despite the dire situation, the only hospital in the region treating severe malnutrition cases is overwhelmed and turning away patients. The United Nations has reported a drastic reduction in its Somalia program budget, with only 13 percent of its funding target met this year.
The ongoing conflict and climate-related challenges have created a worsening humanitarian crisis, leaving many families without basic necessities.
