Breaking News: Spain Approves MV Hondius to Sail to Canary Islands Amid Hantavirus Outbreak; Medical Evacuations Underway

Breaking News: Cruise Ship to Sail to Canary Islands After Hantavirus Outbreak

Spain has approved the MV Hondius cruise ship to sail to the Canary Islands following a hantavirus outbreak. The ship, which is currently anchored off Cape Verde, has 147 crew and passengers onboard.

The Spanish Ministry of Health announced that Cape Verde cannot accommodate the ship’s occupants. The Canary Islands are the nearest location with the necessary medical facilities. The ministry emphasized Spain’s obligation to assist those on board, including several Spanish citizens.

A medical flight will evacuate the ship’s doctor, who is critically ill. Three people have died from the virus, and a British national is in intensive care in South Africa. Two crew members require urgent medical attention, while another passenger has reported mild symptoms.

Once the necessary evacuations are completed, the MV Hondius will take three days to reach the Canary Islands. Upon arrival, all passengers will undergo medical examinations and treatment, in coordination with health authorities.

Safety measures will be enforced to protect local populations and health workers during this process. The World Health Organization has stated that the risk to the general public remains low.
