Breaking News: Train Crash in Bedfordshire

A train crash in Bedfordshire has resulted in the death of 60-year-old train driver Shaun Burton and injuries to 162 passengers. The incident occurred on Friday at 17:15 BST near Elstow, when a London-bound train collided with the back of a stationary train.

Investigators from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) reported that Burton’s train passed a red signal moments before the crash. The report indicates that it is unclear what signal the driver received from the automatic warning system (AWS) on the train.

The stationary train had stopped unexpectedly due to a fault with its AWS. Data shows that the signal behind this train was red. Prior to the collision, Burton’s train was traveling at approximately 76 mph, slowing to 49 mph at the moment of impact.

The RAIB plans to conduct a full investigation to assess the actions of those involved and any influencing factors. The general secretary of the train driver union ASLEF has called for improved safety systems to prevent future incidents.
