Breaking News: E-Scooter and E-Bike Injury Claims Exceed £110 Million in the UK
The total cost of damages paid to individuals injured by e-scooters and e-bikes in the UK has surpassed £110 million, according to the BBC. This figure has emerged just seven years after the first claims began. The largest single payout reached £20 million.
In one incident, a woman, referred to as Alison, suffered multiple injuries, including a broken pelvis and wrist, when struck by a private e-scooter in Coventry last year. She is seeking compensation for her injuries.
CCTV footage captured the moment Trevor Chandler, 47, rode his e-scooter into Alison as she crossed the road. He later fled the scene but was arrested and sentenced to 15 months in jail for the incident. Chandler also broke his leg during the collision.
The Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB), which handles such claims, is advocating for stricter regulations on the sale of e-scooters. Experts state that the rising costs of payouts are contributing to increased insurance premiums for the general public.
E-scooters and e-bikes are becoming more common on UK streets, raising concerns about safety in urban areas.
