Breaking News: US Plans to Indict Former Cuban President Raul Castro Over 1996 Plane Downing Incident

Breaking News: Potential Indictment of Raul Castro

The United States plans to indict former Cuban President Raul Castro, according to multiple US media reports. The potential charges relate to the 1996 downing of humanitarian planes by Cuba, which were flown by the anti-Castro group Brothers to the Rescue.

Raul Castro, 94, is the brother of Fidel Castro and succeeded him as president. Any indictment would require approval from a grand jury. This development comes amid a US blockade that has severely limited fuel supplies to Cuba.

The news follows a meeting in Havana between a US delegation led by CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Cuban officials. During this meeting, the US offered $100 million in humanitarian aid, contingent on the Cuban government agreeing to significant reforms.

This potential indictment marks a significant escalation in US-Cuba relations, which have worsened since President Donald Trump took office for a second term in 2025. Trump has expressed intentions to push for regime change in Cuba, particularly following actions against Venezuela.

The situation in Cuba has led to severe fuel shortages, with the Energy Minister reporting that the country has completely run out of diesel and fuel oil.
