Breaking News: YouTube Removes Harmful Eating Disorder Videos After CCDH Report Highlights Risks to Vulnerable Users

Breaking News: YouTube Faces Criticism Over Harmful Content

A recent report by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) highlights ongoing issues with harmful content on YouTube. Alexandra Johnson, a senior research manager at CCDH, noted that while regulations show some positive impact, harmful videos remain accessible, particularly for vulnerable users.

The report identified troubling content still being recommended by YouTube. This includes videos promoting extreme thinness, diets with dangerously low calorie intake, and subliminal weight loss methods. None of these videos triggered crisis panels that direct users to support services.

In 2026, the CCDH found that warnings appeared on other diet videos but not on those classified as potentially harmful. Google states it prohibits content that encourages eating disorders but allows recovery stories. Following the report, YouTube has removed the identified videos for violating community guidelines.

A YouTube spokeswoman emphasized the platform’s commitment to viewer wellbeing and collaboration with mental health experts. YouTube has also introduced curated videos for teen accounts on sensitive topics like depression and eating disorders. The CCDH focused on YouTube due to its popularity among children, with 88% of 3-17 year-olds reporting usage.
