Breaking News: Violence Erupts in Paris After PSG Victory
Police in France have detained 416 people nationwide following violent clashes in Paris after Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) won the Champions League final against Arsenal. Of those detained, 283 were apprehended in Paris.
Around 22,000 police were deployed across France, with 8,000 stationed in the capital. This was in response to previous unrest during PSG’s win last year. Tram lines and several metro stations were closed to minimize disturbances.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez reported that seven police officers were injured during the unrest. Six vehicles and two businesses were damaged. Supporters also blocked the Paris ring road and set off flares.
Celebrations drew about 20,000 fans to the Champs-Elysees. Police seized two dozen flares and around 100 fireworks. Clashes occurred near PSG’s Parc des Princes stadium, where some fans attempted to breach security.
As a precaution, shops boarded up their windows before the match. Police are investigating the incidents, and PSG players are scheduled for a parade on Sunday.
