Breaking News: Power Restored Across Jamaica After Islandwide Outage
Jamaica has restored power following a rare islandwide blackout that occurred overnight. The outage began around 9 PM local time on Friday.
Energy Minister Daryl Vaz confirmed on Saturday morning that all affected customers have had their power restored. He urged residents experiencing isolated issues to reach out for assistance.
The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS), the sole electricity distributor on the island, reported that by 2 AM Saturday, power had been restored to approximately 140,000 customers. By 5 AM, this number increased to 500,000 of JPS’s 700,000 customers.
Minister Vaz announced an emergency meeting with JPS officials to discuss the incident. He has requested a full report from the company within 24 hours, including the cause of the outage.
No official explanation has been provided yet. JPS stated it is investigating the matter. The blackout raised concerns about the electrical grid’s resilience, especially at the start of the Atlantic hurricane season.
