“Equal AI Revolutionizes Call Management in India with Smart Assistant App”

Equal AI: Revolutionizing Call Management in India

In India, consumers face a barrage of calls daily, from spam and scams to legitimate inquiries from delivery personnel and financial service providers. While applications like Truecaller and the government’s Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) system help identify callers, simply knowing the caller’s name often falls short. In response to this challenge, Equal AI is developing an innovative assistant designed to handle calls on behalf of users, gather essential information, and convey the purpose of each call.

Overview of the Equal AI App

Currently available on Android, the Equal AI app has rapidly gained traction since its launch last year, boasting over one million monthly active users and more than 300,000 daily active users. The app not only screens incoming calls but also displays the reason for the call, enhancing communication clarity.

When a call is received, the app offers quick reply options such as “Leave the delivery near the door” or “Give it to the neighbor.” Users can also compose custom messages for the AI to relay. Additionally, the app records calls and maintains a history of recordings and transcriptions, providing users with a comprehensive summary of their interactions.

Recent Funding and Growth

Equal AI recently announced a successful $30 million Series B funding round, led by Prosus Ventures and Tomales Bay Capital, with participation from Think Investments and Valiant Fund. Notable individual investors include Sameer Nigam, founder of PhonePe, and Anshu Sharma, co-founder of Skyflow AI. With this latest round, the startup has raised over $42 million to date.

The funding round is structured in three tranches, each with a different valuation based on the achievement of predetermined targets. This approach allows startups to sell equity at varied prices within the same round, a strategy that, while uncommon, provides flexibility in valuation reporting.

The Vision Behind Equal AI

Founded by Keshav Reddy in 2022, Equal AI initially focused on data-sharing for financial services but has since pivoted towards consumer-facing applications. Reddy, whose family is connected to the Indian conglomerate GVK, recognized the need for a solution to the overwhelming volume of calls related to financial services and job opportunities.

“The first use case we launched was a call assistant because we realized users get inundated with calls, especially when seeking services like car insurance,” Reddy explained.

Future Developments and Features

Currently, the app screens only unknown calls; however, Equal AI plans to expand its capabilities to include known numbers. Future updates may allow the AI assistant to perform proactive tasks like sending texts to delivery personnel or making outbound calls to schedule appointments. An iOS version of the app is also in the works, along with a paid subscription model offering additional features.

The technology behind Equal AI integrates speech recognition, automatic speech recognition (ASR), and speech generation models tailored to handle the linguistic diversity of India. The app supports over ten languages, accommodating the prevalent practice of code-mixing among Indian consumers.

Competitive Landscape

Equal AI faces competition from established players such as Google and Apple, both of which offer call screening solutions. Additionally, Truecaller is expanding its own AI assistant features. However, Reddy believes that Equal AI’s deep understanding of local context gives it a competitive advantage.

“Equal AI aims to provide context on why someone is calling, fostering user loyalty and enabling future expansion into other areas,” Reddy noted.

Conclusion

As Equal AI continues to innovate within the call management space, its focus on user needs and local context positions it well for future growth. The startup is committed to creating a versatile solution that not only enhances call screening but also empowers users through proactive assistance.
