Former Sinaloa Security Chief Gerardo Merida Sanchez Arrested in Arizona, Faces Drug Trafficking Charges in New York

Breaking News: Former Mexican Security Chief Arrested in U.S.

Gerardo Merida Sanchez, a former security chief from Mexico’s Sinaloa state, was arrested in Arizona on May 11. He has been transferred to New York, where he is currently held at a federal detention facility in Brooklyn.

Sanchez, 66, served as Sinaloa’s public security secretary from September 2023 to December 2024. He faces allegations related to the Sinaloa Cartel, according to federal court records.

He is scheduled to appear in federal court in Manhattan on Friday. Sanchez and former Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha were indicted for allegedly conspiring with cartel leaders to import narcotics into the U.S. in exchange for political support and bribes.

Prosecutors claim Sanchez accepted over $100,000 in monthly bribes from the cartel’s faction, Los Chapitos. They allege he protected their operations and leaked sensitive information about law enforcement activities.

This indictment signifies a broader U.S. crackdown on drug cartels, targeting both criminal organizations and political figures.
