Breaking News: Francesca Jones Misses Match Points in Nottingham Open Defeat
Britain’s Francesca Jones lost to Talia Gibson in the first round of the Nottingham Open. Jones missed two match points during the match.
She came back from a set and a break down, and after a medical timeout, forced a deciding set against Gibson. After initially falling behind in the third set, Jones recovered and had two match points while serving at 5-3.
However, Australia’s Gibson broke back and won the match in a tie-break. The final score was 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4). The match lasted three hours and six minutes, making it the longest of Jones’ career.
Jones demonstrated strong performance, serving 15 aces and landing 75% of her first serves. She experienced discomfort during the match, requiring medical attention twice for blood pressure checks and a nasal issue.
In other matches, Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen defeated Maria Sakkari 4-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4. Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter both withdrew from the tournament on Monday.
