Breaking News: Japan and Australia Strengthen Energy Ties Amid Global Supply Concerns
Japan’s Minister Sanae Takaichi visited Australia on May 4, 2026, where she signed agreements to enhance cooperation on energy supplies and critical minerals. During her visit, she highlighted the significant impact of shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz on the Asia Pacific region.
Takaichi stated that the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel has effectively blocked shipping in the Strait, which is vital for global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. Approximately 80% of the oil passing through this route is destined for Asia.
Both leaders expressed urgency in addressing these supply challenges. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese noted his country’s concern over disruptions in liquid fuels and refined petroleum products. Australia currently supplies about one-third of Japan’s energy needs.
Additionally, Australia plans to invest up to $1.3 billion AUD in critical mineral projects with Japanese participation. This initiative aims to secure essential resources for technology and defense.
The two nations have also committed to increased military cooperation, responding to regional security concerns, particularly regarding China.
