Breaking News: Peru’s Presidential Runoff Confirmed Amid Election Controversy
Peruvian election authorities have confirmed that Keiko Fujimori will compete against Roberto Sanchez in a presidential runoff on June 7. This follows a chaotic first round of voting marred by logistical errors and fraud allegations.
The National Jury of Elections (JNE) announced the results on Sunday. Fujimori received 17 percent of the votes, while Sanchez secured 12 percent. The JNE acknowledged significant problems during the first round, including delays in vote counting and logistical issues.
JNE President Roberto Burneo stated that the organization is addressing these challenges to ensure a smoother process for the upcoming runoff. A committee of national and international experts will be assembled for oversight.
Far-right candidate Rafael Lopez Aliaga, who finished third with 11.9 percent, has called for the annulment of the first round, claiming electoral fraud. He stated on social media, “We will not accept results that are the product of fraud and corruption.”
Additionally, the public prosecutor’s office has charged Sanchez with financial crimes just days after the election results were announced.
