Sheffield to Offer Free Sports Sessions for Families This Summer
Sheffield is set to launch a series of free sports sessions aimed at encouraging families to engage in physical activities during the upcoming school summer holidays. The initiative will take place across more than a dozen parks and green spaces in the city, including notable locations such as Firth Park, Greenhill Park, and Gleadless Common.
The two-hour sessions will be scheduled for afternoons and evenings, featuring a variety of sports including football, rounders, and other multi-sport activities. These sessions are designed to cater to all ages and skill levels, ensuring that family-friendly games are accessible to everyone.
Everyone Active, an organization contracted by Sheffield City Council to manage leisure, health, and wellbeing facilities, will oversee the events. Participants can also look forward to complimentary food and drink during the sessions.
Lorenzo Clark, a representative from Everyone Active, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “The scheme provides activities for those who might not necessarily be able to go away on holiday because of affordability. We place expert coaches in these sessions so participants can try new activities as well as enjoy familiar ones.”
Everyone Active is responsible for several prominent facilities in the area, including the English Institute of Sport, Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, and Ice Sheffield. This initiative aligns with their mission to promote health and well-being within the community.
The summer activity sessions are scheduled to run from July 20 to August 28. Advance booking is recommended to secure participation, and more information can be found on the Everyone Active website.
Councillor Brian Holmshaw, who chairs the communities, parks, and leisure policy committee at Sheffield City Council, highlighted the significance of the program. “The school summer holidays are always an exciting time for children across Sheffield, but they can pose a challenge for parents looking for ways to entertain their kids during the day. These activities are perfect for getting families out and about across the city, promoting physical activity and fun, hopefully under the sun.”
This initiative not only aims to foster community engagement but also to promote healthier lifestyles among families in Sheffield. By providing accessible and enjoyable sports activities, the city hopes to make the summer holidays a memorable experience for all participants.
