Study Finds Climate Change Intensifies Drought Conditions Across Europe Due to Extreme Heat

Rising Threat of Drought in Europe Linked to Climate Change

In a comprehensive study released on Thursday, an international team of scientists revealed that human-induced climate change is significantly intensifying the drought across Europe. The research emphasizes that elevated temperatures, rather than solely diminished rainfall, are driving the continent’s increasingly parched conditions.

Currently, Europe is facing one of its most severe droughts in recent history. Countries ranging from France to Romania are grappling with parched rivers, stringent water restrictions, and rampant wildfires. This dire situation follows a historic heatwave in June 2023, which resulted in an alarming spike in mortality rates.

Climate Change as a Key Factor

The study, conducted by the World Weather Attribution group, underlines that while many regions experienced below-average rainfall during the spring of 2023, it is the rising temperatures that exacerbate drought severity. Mariam Zachariah, a co-author of the research from Imperial College London, stated, “This drought is not primarily caused by low rainfalls but by a warmer atmosphere that leads to increased moisture loss from the soil and water bodies.”

Zachariah further articulated that even in areas where rainfall remains consistent or is expected to increase, the risk of drought continues to rise due to climate change. She explained, “A warmer atmosphere can retain approximately seven percent more water vapor for each degree Celsius increase in temperature.” With global temperatures having risen by about 1.4°C since the late 19th century—largely due to the combustion of fossil fuels—the implications for Europe are dire.

Frequent and Severe Weather Events

Scientists highlight that climate change is making destructive weather events, such as droughts, floods, and heatwaves, increasingly common and severe. Currently, Europe holds the distinction as the fastest-warming continent globally, as confirmed by the Copernicus Climate Change Service. June 2023 marked the hottest June ever recorded in Western Europe, with the extreme heat translating to thousands of excess deaths.

According to Dominik Schumacher from ETH Zurich, the heatwave was such that regions that had experienced wet winters found their soils rapidly drying out. “Increasingly hot air will draw moisture from the soil, leading to a reinforcing cycle of drying and heating,” Schumacher noted. This rapid loss of moisture further creates conditions that are conducive to wildfires.

Understanding the Drought Dynamics

The researchers employed weather data and computer modeling to assess drought conditions in the current, warmer climate compared to that of a cooler world. Their findings were alarming. It was determined that extremely dry soils are five times more likely to occur today in Western Europe compared to a world without climate change, and the likelihood jumps to 11 times in Eastern Europe.

Additionally, the extraordinarily high levels of evaporative demand observed between April and June in Western Europe were about 80 times more likely due to a warmer atmosphere. Zachariah summarized this phenomenon, stating, “Because the atmosphere is thirstier now, the same rainfall deficit that previously would not have led to drought can now escalate into a much more severe situation.”
