Breaking News: Police Leadership in England and Wales Under Review
The police service in England and Wales is facing significant criticism from Lord Blunkett, who claims it is “not good enough.” In an exclusive interview with the BBC, he highlighted weaknesses in leadership, morale, and culture within the service.
A major report co-authored by Lord Blunkett will be published on Monday. It identifies “significant causes for concern” and calls for a “fundamental overhaul” of police leadership. The report recommends a comprehensive modernization of recruitment, development, and monitoring practices.
Currently, none of the 43 police forces in England and Wales received an “outstanding” grade for leadership in recent inspections. Nearly one-third require improvement, with two rated as inadequate.
Lord Blunkett noted that several senior police officials are under investigation, with eight former or current chief constables facing disciplinary actions.
The report also addresses challenges such as limited resources, excessive paperwork, and a demotivating leadership culture. The College of Policing commissioned this review to ensure the service meets evolving threats and public expectations.
