Urgent: Temporary VAT Cut to 5% on Theme Parks, Zoos, and Museums Starts June 25 to Alleviate Family Costs During Summer Holidays

Breaking News: Temporary VAT Cut for Family Activities Begins Thursday

A temporary VAT cut from 20% to 5% will take effect on June 25, 2023, for family-related activities. This measure aims to make theme parks, zoos, museums, and kids’ meals more affordable during the summer holidays.

The cut aligns with the school summer break in Scotland, followed by Northern Ireland, England, and Wales in July. It is part of government efforts to ease the cost of living for families.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves stated the initiative is designed to help families enjoy summer activities without excessive costs. However, some families and organizations express skepticism about the actual savings. They worry that the savings may not be passed on to customers.

Helen Miller, director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, estimates that the average household could save around £10 from this VAT reduction. Reeves also announced additional support, including unlimited free bus travel for children in England during August.

The government continues to implement various measures to assist households facing rising costs, such as freezing prescription charges and providing relief on energy bills.
