US Military Launches Air Strikes Against ISIL in Northeastern Nigeria Following Recent Leadership Killings

Breaking News: US and Nigeria Conduct Air Strikes Against ISIL in Northeastern Nigeria

The United States military’s Africa Command (AFRICOM) has confirmed it conducted air strikes against ISIL (ISIS) fighters in northeastern Nigeria. The strikes took place on Sunday and were coordinated with the Nigerian government. No US or Nigerian forces were harmed.

AFRICOM stated that these actions aim to reduce the threat posed by ISIL. The strikes follow the announcement of the death of Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, the group’s second-in-command, who was killed in a separate operation.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu reported that al-Minuki was targeted along with several of his lieutenants in the Lake Chad Basin. This operation was described as a significant blow to ISIL’s leadership and operations in West Africa.

US President Donald Trump announced al-Minuki’s death on social media, though details about the joint military operation were not disclosed. Recent months have seen an increase in US military presence in Nigeria to support local forces against armed groups.

Nigerian Defence Headquarters spokesman Samaila Uba clarified that US soldiers will not engage in direct combat but will provide technical expertise under Nigerian command.
