Breaking News: Venezuela Declares State of Emergency After Earthquakes
Caracas, Venezuela – Vice President Delcy Rodríguez addressed the nation on state television, VTV, following a series of earthquakes that struck the region. Her speech came more than two hours after the quakes, during which official information was limited due to downed communication channels in severely affected areas.
Rodríguez was joined by her brother Jorge and Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello. She called for unity among Venezuelans, who have been divided in their support for President Nicolás Maduro and his predecessor, Hugo Chávez.
In her announcement, Rodríguez declared a state of emergency and appointed General Juan Ernesto Sulbarán, the commander of Venezuela’s National Guard, to lead the emergency response efforts.
The government has faced criticism over the management of infrastructure, with key ministries historically led by military officers. Recent changes include appointing civilians with relevant expertise to important positions, such as in housing and electricity.
Venezuela’s housing stock has suffered due to years of shortages and mismanagement, leading to deteriorating conditions. The lack of materials, particularly cement, has hindered necessary repairs, increasing the risk of building collapses.
