Gatwick Airport Faces Water Supply Failure, Leaving Passengers Without Toilets or Dining Options

Water Supply Issues at Gatwick Airport Leave Passengers Stranded

On Sunday morning, passengers at Gatwick Airport faced significant disruption due to a water supply failure, which rendered toilets inoperable and affected access to food and beverage services. The situation quickly garnered attention on social media as travelers reported being unable to obtain hot drinks, wash their hands, or refill water bottles.

The water supply issue, attributed to complications in the nearby Horley area, impacted not only the airport’s two terminals but also affected several regions in Sussex and Kent, as reported by utility providers. In an official statement, Gatwick Airport acknowledged the problem, explaining, “A water issue in the Horley area is causing disruption at the airport this morning. The problem is affecting water supply in both terminals and is currently under investigation.”

To mitigate the inconvenience, Gatwick Airport staff distributed bottled water to both passengers and personnel while implementing contingency measures to ensure passenger welfare. The airport emphasized that, despite the water disruption, flight schedules remained unaffected.

SES Water, the utility company responsible for the supply in the region, issued updates regarding the situation. They confirmed that there were interruptions to water services impacting the TN11, RH1, RH6, and RH10 postcode areas. By 2 PM, SES Water announced that their Bough Beech water treatment plant was back online and that they were in the process of treating water to restore services as swiftly as possible. The company expressed gratitude for the patience of customers and airport partners while apologizing for the inconvenience caused.

Prominent figures, such as TalkTV presenter Julia Hartley-Brewer, took to social media to inform travelers about the situation, highlighting the lack of running water throughout the airport. This led to widespread discomfort among travelers, including comments on social media platforms where frustrated passengers described the situation as “ridiculous”, citing the inability to obtain food or beverages.

Passengers expressed their dissatisfaction with the ongoing circumstances. One traveler en route to New York remarked, “There was no communication. We arrived and it had only started recently.” Another posted: “Gasping for a drink & crossing my legs right now. This is ridiculous! Gatwick airport has shut all restaurants and most toilets due to a water outage. Not a great start to the holiday.”

Amid growing frustration, some individuals called for accountability, suggesting that at the very least, sitting areas in closed restaurants and bars should remain accessible to accommodate the stranded passengers. Former MP and newly appointed government “music champion” Michael Dugher echoed these sentiments, stressing the need for facilities that would provide relief to families stuck without seating options.

As investigations into the water supply failure continue, Gatwick Airport officials and SES Water remain committed to resolving the issues as quickly as possible, assuring customers that further updates will be provided. Travelers are advised to stay informed about the evolving situation as they navigate a challenging start to their journeys.
