Breaking News: Netanyahu Plans to Attend UN Assembly Amid Controversy
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York City this autumn. This announcement comes despite previous threats from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to arrest him.
Last week, Mamdani acknowledged that he does not have the legal authority to enforce an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Netanyahu. The prime minister expressed that he is “not concerned” about the mayor’s earlier statements and accused him of inciting division among New Yorkers.
Netanyahu referenced recent stabbings in New York, where a suspect attacked a Jewish man and an Asian man. The suspect reportedly shouted “Allahu akbar” during the incidents and has been charged with hate crimes.
Both victims survived the attacks, which led to condemnations from local leaders. Netanyahu stated that Jewish residents in New York are currently “afraid.”
Mamdani, a supporter of Palestinian rights, had previously campaigned on the promise to enforce the ICC warrant against Netanyahu. However, he later clarified that his administration cannot enforce it and called for federal action.
