Breaking News: Detained Student in China
Zhang Yadi, a 23-year-old student known as Tara, is reportedly in detention in China. She was believed to be studying at a prestigious university in the UK.
Tara was arrested in July 2022 while visiting Shangri-La in Yunnan province. She faces charges of “inciting others to split the country and undermine national unity.” Her arrest is linked to her social media posts supporting Tibetan rights, including a message wishing the Dalai Lama a happy 90th birthday.
Beijing views the Dalai Lama as a separatist and considers Tibet an integral part of China. The Chinese government has been criticized for its treatment of dissidents, both domestically and abroad.
As a new “Ethnic Unity Law” takes effect, it may give the government more power to target individuals outside its borders. This law has raised concerns among human rights advocates.
Meanwhile, China is seeking to improve its international image by easing visa restrictions and welcoming foreign leaders. This includes recent visits from global leaders like US President Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
