Breaking News: Typhoon Bavi Approaches Eastern China
Hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated from eastern China as Typhoon Bavi approaches the coast. This is the second powerful typhoon to hit the country in a week.
Typhoon Bavi, spanning 1,000 kilometers (620 miles), is expected to make landfall near the city of Wenzhou on Sunday morning. The city has a population of around 10 million people.
After impacting remote Japanese islands, Bavi has brought heavy rainfall to Taiwan. Earlier landslides in the Philippines caused by the storm resulted in 17 fatalities.
Although Bavi has weakened to a Category 1 typhoon, it still poses risks due to the significant moisture in its rain bands. Authorities warn of “exceptionally heavy rains” for eastern Zhejiang province and northeastern Fujian province.
Bavi initially formed as a super typhoon, with wind speeds reaching 290 km/h (180 mph). It later weakened to 144 km/h as it passed through the Pacific, causing injuries and power outages in Japan.
Taiwan faced heavy rains, prompting evacuations, but no direct hits or fatalities have been reported in either Japan or Taiwan.
